In the days and years following, Bush couldn't talk about the tragedy because of pending lawsuits. Three months after the collapse, Bush's divorce was final. Then, duo partner Nettles got married and soon after told him she was pregnant and wanted to make a solo album. He had to get the feelings out, and he was discouraged from talking. But he didn't write about the dark place he was in his life; he wrote about the place he wanted to be — happy. The songs were like Post-it Notes that he put on his mirror to tell himself to keep going.
Bush is seated at a conference table in his publicist's office with large windows overlooking the Gulch. He quips, "Let it be known by the court reporter that they just brought in wine," when an intern shows up with paper cups and a brown bag.
He takes a glass of red and swirls the liquid around, but doesn't take a drink. I realized it was very, very painful. For a long time, Bush said, he didn't know what had really happened. Even though the stage had collapsed, he and Nettles weren't allowed to leave the dressing room area underneath it. What a big transition. Although the cause of the stage's collapse was later determined to be due, at least in part, to poor assembly, several lawsuits were filed against Sugarland following the tragedy, since their contract gave them the final say on whether or not to cancel the show.
One mass lawsuit filed involved 44 survivors and family members of four of the seven deceased. I thank God for every person who lifted a truss, who pushed against that metal to get it off someone; for every person who used a chair as a stretcher.
