Who is pyramid head in silent hill

This has lead many to believe that James' face may be hiding underneath Pyramid Head's mask, but that remains only a theory. There's a lot the Silent Hill games leave unknown about Pyramid Head, but, luckily for fans of the series, artist Masahiro Ito has an active Twitter presence. Ito was one of the artists who worked on Silent Hill 2 and the creator of Pyramid Head.

Ito occasionally posts early sketches for Pyramid Head and other iconic Silent Hill characters. A fan recently commented on one of Ito's posts from several years ago, and the artist revealed an interesting detail about the iconic character's weapon.

Ito has drawn Pyramid Head holding its Great Knife many different ways, but Twitter user samwisegameboy was specifically curious as to why the character holds the knife backwards in Silent Hill 2. In a quote tweet, Ito revealed Pyramid Head's Great Knife is actually one side of a pair of scissors, meant to be the other half of James' Great Knife.

Ito wanted to use this revelation as a way of hinting that Pyramid Head is actually the other half of James. The two knives could come together to make a pair of scissors, just as Pyramid Head and James come together to make a complete James. It's not entirely clear in Ito's tweet, but it appears he meant to make James' half somehow distinct from Pyramid Head's or to have the two halves unite at some point, but he didn't have time to do so. Taking a closer look at Pyramid Head's Great Knife, it's easy to see the blade is indeed just half a pair of scissors.

The only semblance of a mouth can be known from a tongue-like appendage that Pyramid Head can bring out by peeling up the corner of the front plate of the pyramid. Readers should note going forward that this analysis of the symbolism behind Pyramid Head in Silent Hill and his actions contain heavy spoilers for the entirety of Silent Hill 2. As always, this is up to interpretation, and those who wish to not be spoiled are not advised to go forward.

James Sunderland is the main protagonist and playable character of Silent Hill 2. After the death of his wife, Mary Sunderland, James receives a letter from her postmortem that asks him to meet her in Silent Hill.

Being that Silent Hill was a favorite vacation spot for the two of them, James travels there and finds twisted horrors awaiting him. While trying to find Mary, James encounters other people who are looking for things or people in Silent Hill as well as a woman named Maria that looks exactly like Mary. The main difference between the two however is that Maria has a more outgoing personality and fashion choices while Mary was very modest in nature. She ends up becoming James' companion through his journey in Silent Hill.

Eventually, it is revealed that the letter James has been holding the entire time has been blank and that he in actuality had killed Mary very recently before the game had started and that Mary's body was back in James' car trunk at the start of the game.

What James does with remembering this information is based on what actions the player took throughout the game. With Pyramid Head being the main aggressor throughout Silent Hill 2 , he symbolizes many facets of James Sunderland's personality and feelings toward himself and Mary. No matter what route players find themselves on in Silent Hill 2 , James is always enraptured by the guilt of killing his wife and the actions he took leading up to it.

A large part of Pyramid Head's design and character is based around this deep sense of guilt and pain. When designing Pyramid Head, the sharp points of the pyramid were created to subtly suggest pain going toward the monster as well, as Pyramid Head is a reflection of James. As can be seen in a painting and as Pyramid Head's title in Dead by Daylight , he is also known as the Executioner.

Soon after Pyramid Head leaves the apartment. His next appearance is at the Blue Creek Apartments, raping another creature past the door, leading to the emergency staircase. Pyramid Head sees James, and a boss battle ensues. The battle goes on until a siren rings out, and Pyramid Head makes his way down the stairs. Pyramid Head makes another appearance when he attacks James at the top of Brookhaven Hospital , knocking him off the side of the building.

He leaves him injured, but does not pursue him afterwards. Afterwards, Pyramid Head starts to torment Maria as well in the hospital. In a narrow corridor, James and Maria are being chased by Pyramid Head, and attempt to make it to the elevator. James makes it to the elevator, but Maria doesn't. As James tries to open the door, Maria is impaled by Pyramid Head, and screams in agony as the elevator door closes.

Pyramid Head makes another appearance in the Labyrinth of the Toluca prison. He chases you with a spear. James can enter a room where Pyramid Head lives, where the player can take Pyramid Head's great knife and use it as a weapon for the rest of the game.

The weapon itself is awkward and has little use other than one hit kills and in the fight with Eddie. At one point in the prison, you run into Maria on the other side of a prison cell. By the time you go around the building and find the door that leads to her, she is dead on the cell's bed. It is inferred that Pyramid Head is the cause of this. Pyramid Head makes his final appearance just before the final boss, where two Pyramid Heads a 'red' one, for new blood, and a 'brown' one, for old blood take part in the encounter.

They kill Maria a third time, and then attack James. After relentlessly pursuing James around the room for a while, eventually both Pyramid Heads commit suicide, by impaling themselves on their spears. The peculiar thing about Pyramid Head, even though he is considered a boss, one never has to actually engage him in battle.

The first battle, he leaves on his own free will, and the one in the labyrinth, and corridor must never be engaged in battle. The last battle with both of the pyramid heads ends after they kill themselves. Attacking them only speed the process up, according to the difficulty.

Pyramid Head acts as a metaphor for James, as he murders Maria, a manifestation of James' lust towards his dead wife, multiple times in the game.
